Phil Hay is an American screenwriter. He has co-written the films Crazy/Beautiful, Æon Flux, Clash of the Titans (2010), R.I.P.D., Ride Along, The Invitation (2015), Ride Along 2, and Destroyer (2018), all with his professional partner Matt Manfredi. Also with Matt, he co-directed the film Bug (2002), and co-created the show The Mysterious Benedict Society, which the two also wrote for.

He is married to film and television director Karyn Kusama, with whom he has one child. Karyn directed the Phil and Matt-written Æon Flux, The Invitation, and Destroyer.

Phil’s paternal grandfather was Everette E. Hay (the son of Claude Everette Hay and Grace V. Hartle). Everette was born in either Illinois or Indiana. Claude was born in Indiana, the son of William M. Hay and Elizabeth Worman. Grace was born in Illinois, the daughter of Jacob Hartle Jr. and Mary Frances Hendricks.

Phil’s paternal grandmother was Louise Lena Lueschen (the daughter of Fredrick Martin Lueschen and Lena Caroline Schultz). Louise was born in Illinois. Fredrick was born in Oldenburg, Germany. Lena was born in Germany, the daughter of William Schultz and Mary.

Phil’s maternal grandfather was named John Slavik.

Phil’s maternal grandmother was named Janet K. Sierzega.

    He appears to have some Polish/Slovak ancestry on his mothers side. His parents were Donald Everette Hay (1943-1993) and Jacqueline Slavik (1943). Jacqueline was the daughter of John Slavik and Janet K. Sierzega.
