Gypsy Rose Lee was an American burlesque entertainer, stripper, vedette, actress, author, and playwright. She was famous for her striptease act. Her memoir Gypsy was adapted into the stage musical of the same name.

Gypsy Rose was the daughter of Rose Thompson Hovick and John Olaf Hovick, who was a newspaper-advertising salesman, and a reporter at The Seattle Times. Her paternal grandparents were Norwegian. Her sister was actress, dancer, stage director, and memoirist June Havoc (born Ellen Evangeline Hovick), who was born in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Gypsy Rose had a son, writer, director, and producer Erik Lee Preminger, with Austrian-born American theatre and film director, film producer, and actor Otto Preminger.

Gypsy Rose’s paternal grandfather was Sven/Svein Olsen/Olson Høvik/Hovick (the son of Ole Knudsen/Knutson Olmoe/Ålmo Sedmundset Høvik and Marit Svendsdatter/Sveinsdotter Høvik).
