Maggie Hassan is an American politician and attorney. A member of the Democratic Party, she has served as a U.S. Senator from New Hampshire, since January 3, 2017. She was previously Majority Leader of the New Hampshire Senate, from January 3, 2008 to December 1, 2010, and Governor of New Hampshire, from January 3, 2013 to January 2, 2017.
Maggie is the daughter of Margaret and Robert Coldwell Wood. Her father was a political scientist, academic and government administrator, and professor of political science at MIT, who served as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, from January 7, 1969 to January 20, 1969. He was born in Missouri. Maggie’s brother is actor Frank Wood.
Maggie is married to educator Thomas Hassan, with whom she has two children. Thomas was Principal of Phillips Exeter Academy, from September 2009 to June 2015. Thomas’s ancestors surnamed Hassan were from Ireland.
