Nicolas Winding Refn is a Danish film director, screenwriter, and producer.

He is the son of Anders Refn, a film director and editor, and Vibeke Winding (Tuxen), a cinematographer. He is married to actress and documentary filmmaker Liv Corfixen, with whom he has two children.

Nicolas’s ancestry includes Danish, Swedish, and some German and Finland-Swedish.

Nicolas is described in places on the internet as being of Jewish heritage. It does not appear that this is accurate.

Nicolas’s paternal grandfather was Holger/Helge Erik Lund Rasmussen/Refn, a painter (the son of Hans Emil Rasmussen/Refn and Ella Lund). Holger was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. Hans was the son of Peder Christian Rasmussen and Rasmine Nielsen. Ella was the daughter of Johan Erik Lund and Pauline Charlotte Poulsen.

Nicolas’s paternal grandmother was Maj Ingegerd Munck/Munch, af Rosenschöld (the daughter of Nils Adolf Eberhard Munck/Munch, af Rosenschöld, and of Elisabeth/Elsa Frölich). Maj Ingegerd was born in Ljungby, Sweden. Nils was the son of Thomas Munck, af Rosenschöld, and of Augusta Charlotta Malmborg. Nicolas’s great-grandmother Elisabeth was the daughter of Oskar Frölich and Anna Maria Elisabet Schartau.
