Bill Nelson is an American politician and astronaut. A member of the Democratic party, he has been Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), since May 3, 2021. He has also served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida, from January 3, 1979 to January 3, 1991, Treasurer of Florida, from January 3, 1995 to January 3, 2001, and a U.S. Senator from Florida, from January 3, 2001 to January 3, 2019, among other duties.
Bill is the son of Nannie Merle (Nelson) and Clarence William Nelson. Though both of his parents were born with the surname Nelson, the two Nelson families are not related. He is married to Grace Cavert, with whom he has two children.
Bill’s paternal grandfather was Charles Hart Nelson (the son of George Nelson and Phena/Tryphena Rhodes). Charles was born in Illinois. George was born in England or Ireland.
