….of course if a Nigerian persons ethnicity is unknown you can just keep Nigerian…. but Sade’s Nigerian side is Yoruba.

If a Nigerian’s persons ethnicity is unknown –they have no tribe and are considered mutts. Africans are very ethnocentric and proud of their blood lines–even today, if a person marries outside their ethnic group it is up in the air whether each side will accept the outsider/spouse. Nigerians as a country were the main Africans who agreed to exchange slaves for beads, etc even though traditionally slaves could be like family and even marry–and they were trading them to outside the black race–many sold were war prizes (defeated became slaves) but warring factions also used the slave trade to get rid of political rivals and many were tricked or kidnapped. The tragedy is not just that Nigerians had (and many still have ) a thug mentality–it is that whites try to pretend because some Africans did this–it justifies all that they did. Two wrongs never make a right and each is accountable for what each did. the irony is that for the most part–the descendants of slaves did better and had better lives than many of the people whose ancestors sold them. Payback is a motha.

There’s no such ethnicity as ‘Nigerian’, not even a dominant one like how Chinese refers to the dominant Han Chinese. The ethnic group Sade come from is the Yoruba, who are a population of over 30 million in South western Nigeria. When classifying African, and specifically Nigerian people’s ethnicity it would be wise to check whether they are Igbo, Yoruba, Ijaw, Efik, Hausa, Fulani, Xhosa, Asante, etc.

but what race? when someone is listed as just an American does that still mean they are white Americans? An English mother? But what race? I was born in England–but I am black–does that mean I am no longer English? Or a different “English ” than white English? English does not let us know her ethnicity–when just a country is mentioned is that defacto for the white in that country?

That’s always a bit of a difficult question. English is an ethnicity, so it would be more correct to say that you’re British. Unless one of your parents were English, then I guess you would be English. But English is an ethnicity just like Yoruba.
