Her estranged father had insisted that Jelena was born in Belgrade, Serbia but it was later revealed that she was born in Osijek, Croatia during the time Serbia and Croatia were apart of Yugoslavia.
She once represented Serbia and Montenegro at the height of her career, but then returned home to play under the Australian flag.
