His paternal grandfather was of Italian descent, and his paternal grandmother was of German, and some Polish, ancestry. Leonardo’s mother is a German immigrant, and is of German and Russian descent. A picture of Leonardo with his mother and maternal grandmother can be seen here.

He is said to have been named Leonardo because, he first started kicking inside his mother’s womb when she was viewing a Leonardo da Vinci painting in a museum.

Leonardo’s paternal grandfather was George Leon DiCaprio (the son of Salvatore D. DiCaprio and Rosina Cassella). George was born in New York, to Italian parents, from Alife, Province of Caserta, Campania. Salvatore was the son of Biase/Biagio Di Caprio/DiCaprio and Maria Emanuela/Emanuele Incagnoli. Rosina was the daughter of Cipriano Cassella and Camilla Conzales.

Leonardo’s maternal grandmother was named Yelena/Helene Lisbeth Smirnova/Smirnow (the daughter of Stefan/Stepan Petrovich Smirnov and Irene/Irina). Yelena was of Russian origin, possibly with roots in Mishkinsky District, Bashkortostan. Leonardo’s great-grandfather Stefan was the son of Pyotr/Petr Smirnov.

    Typical italian face.

Of course, blond hair and blue eyes are “typical italian”lol
His father is half-italian, and his mother is german,
without any russians. Her both parents spoke german
without accent. Her mother was Helen, and not “Elina”,
and Leo always told, how he likes his granny’s german
meal. I don’t know, how started this rumour

Blonde hair is not that common (only 10% among adults), but light eyes are pretty common (between 25% and 50, depending on the region you want to look for).

Haha, what? you know italians are root of whiteness right? If a person is italian, he cant be more white.

  3. levangelista36 says:

    No one is white.

A lot of them have distant Native American ancestry. Sometimes they have distant African ancestry.

A lot of them have Southern European and/or Eastern European roots. A lot of them are also Jewish. A lot of them are also Southeastern European.

Northern Europeans, even though they are the blondest in the world, really DO have Mongoloid admixture. Ever wonder why Renee Zellwegger has such an Asian looking face despite being so blonde and blue-eyed?

Western Europeans were mixed with the Spanish and Romans. That’s why you have types like Catherine Zeta Jones, Cheryl Cole, Russell Brand, George Clooney, Marlon Brando, Frankie Sandford, Claudine Farrell, Chris Coleman, Tom Jones, Gavin Henson, Kimberley Walsh, Oralndo Bloom, Nadine Coyle, Victoria Beckham, and such who pop up.

There’s no such thing as white people. No such thing.

Since he’s not white, why is he playing a slave master in Tarantino’s Django Unchained? Jonah Hill is Jewish, and he is playing a slave master as well. James Russo, Franco Nero, and Tom Savini are full blooded Italian, and they are playing slave masters in Django Unchained as well. This is not right. Tarantino is not white either. He has Italian and Cherokee ancestry. So, why do articles refer to him as a white man writing and directing a story about slaves? I don’t get it.

      Good joke dude.

My mind just blew. You do understand that anyone in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa is considered “white” by the US gov. If anything, he isn’t all “white” because he has Russian in him. Not every single European has peachy skin and light colored hair. Some have more olive colored skin with dark hair and eyes (like his dad). Still not any less “white” than any other European.

      • goallman says:

Russians are “white” you moron! Don’t give me that Siberian crock. In that case every European American has African and Native Indian because they happen to be there and couldn’t possible resist mating with each other. How do you explain the distinct look Southern Americans have? Are you going to blame that on Russians as well. Americans are no different or an exception to the rule.
