Susan Rice is an American diplomat, policy advisor, and public official. She has been Director of the Domestic Policy Council, since January 20, 2021. She previously served as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, from October 14, 1997 to January 20, 2001, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., from January 26, 2009 to June 30, 2013, and U.S. National Security Advisor, from July 1, 2013 to January 20, 2017.

Susan is the daughter of Lois Ann (Dickson) Rice and Emmett J. Rice (Emmett John Rice). Her father was an economics professor at Cornell University, an expert in the monetary systems of developing countries, and Member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, from June 20, 1979 to December 31, 1986. Her mother was a corporate executive, scholar, and education policy expert, who helped design the federal Pell Grant. Her mother re-married to attorney Alfred Bradley Fitt, who was general counsel of the U. S. Congressional Budget Office.

Her parents were both black. Her father was born in Florence, South Carolina, to African-American parents. Her mother was born in Portland, Maine, to Jamaican parents.

Susan is married to Ian Officer Cameron, who was born in Canada, and who was an ABC News executive producer. The couple has two children. Ian is white.

Susan’s paternal grandfather was The Rev. Ulysses Simpson Rice (the son of The Rev. Walter Allen Simpson Rice and Clara Dougherty). The Rev. Ulysses was born in South Carolina. The Rev. Walter founded Bordentown School, a residential high school for African-American students, in Bordentown, Burlington County, New Jersey. Clara was the daughter of Lester Dougherty and Rachel Gordon.

Susan’s paternal grandmother was named Sue Pearl/Suepearl Suber. Sue was born in South Carolina.

Susan’s maternal grandfather was David Augustus Dickson (the son of John Watson Dickson and Isariah Holness). David was born in Watson Hill, Manchester, Jamaica. Isariah was the daughter of Alexander Holness and Mary Ann Burton.

Susan’s maternal grandmother was Mary Maude Daly (the daughter of George Daly and Mary Dunkley). Susan’s grandmother Mary was born in St. Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica.
