Helena Bonham Carter is a British actress.

She is the daughter of Elena (Propper de Callejón), a psychotherapist, and Raymond Bonham Carter, a banker. Her brother is businessperson Edward Bonham Carter. Helena has two children with her former partner, director, producer, and animator Tim Burton.

Helena’s father was from an English family, and one of Helena’s paternal great-grandfathers, Henry Herbert “H. H.” Asquith, a member of the Liberal Party, was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 5 April, 1908 to 5 December, 1916; he was thus the longest continuously serving P.M. of the 20th century.

Helena’s maternal grandfather was born to a Czech Jewish father and to a Catholic mother who had Spanish, Irish, and French ancestry; he was raised in his own mother’s Catholic faith, and was later honored as one of the Righteous Among the Nations for saving Jews during the Holocaust.

Helena’s maternal grandmother was from a Jewish family (they were from Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Bohemia, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, Lithuania, and Poland, among other places). Helena’s maternal grandmother converted to Catholicism after World War II.

Helena’s paternal great-uncle was English film director Anthony Asquith. Her maternal first cousin, once removed, is writer David Pryce-Jones.

Helena’s paternal grandfather was Sir Maurice Bonham Carter (the son of Henry Bonham Carter and Sibella Charlotte Norman). Maurice was born in Paddington, London. He was a Liberal politician, civil servant, and cricketer. Henry was the son of John Bonham-Carter, who added the dash to his name, and who was a politician and Whig MP, and of Joanna Maria Smith; Joanna’s father, William Smith, was a leading independent British politician and MP. Helena’s great-grandmother Sibella was the daughter of George Ward Norman and Sibella Isabella Stone.

Helena’s paternal grandmother was Helen Violet Asquith (the daughter of Henry Herbert “H. H.” Asquith and Helen Kelsall Melland). Helena’s grandmother Helen was born in Hampstead, London. She was a politician and diarist. Prime Minister Asquith was the son of Joseph Dixon Asquith and Emily Willans. Helena’s great-grandmother Helen was the daughter of Frederick Melland and Ann Heap Kelsall.

Helena’s maternal grandfather was Eduardo Propper de Callejón (the son of Maximilian/Maximillian “Max” Propper and Jeanne “Juana” Isabelle Héloïse Dolorès de Callejón Kennedy). Eduardo was born in Madrid, Spain, and was raised Catholic. Eduardo was a diplomat, and saved many Jews during World War II, by helping their escape from occupied France. Eduardo’s father Maximilian was a Czech Jew, who was born in Mšec, Rakovník District, the son of Aloys/Alois Propper and Jeanne/Johanna Kohn. Eduardo’s mother Jeanne de Callejón was Catholic; Jeanne’s father, S. E. Don Juan Bartolomé de Callejón Villegas, was Spanish, from Berja, Almería, Andalucía, and was the Spanish consul in New Orleans. Jeanne’s mother, Marie Louise/Heloise/Eloisa Kennedy y Massicot, was born in Louisiana, and likely had Irish and French ancestry.

Helena’s maternal grandmother was Hélène Roberte Fould-Springer (the daughter of Baron Eugène Charles Joachim Fould, or Fould-Springer, and of Marie-Cécile von Springer). Helena’s grandmother Hélène was born in Paris, France. Her own sister, Liliane de Rothschild, married Baron Élie de Rothschild, of the prominent Rothschild family. Helena’s great-grandfather Baron Eugène was born in Ville-d’Avray, Ile-de-France, France, and was the son of Léon Fould, from Paris, and of Thérèse Bacha Prascovia/Prascovie Ephrussi, from Odessa, Ukraine. Helena’s great-grandmother Marie-Cécile was born in Paris, the daughter of Gustave/Gustav Freiherr von Springer (originally Gustav Springer), from Vienna, Austria, and of Hélène, baronne de Königswarter, from Paris. Helena’s maternal great-grandparents Baron Eugène and Marie-Cécile were both Jewish.

Her great-great-grandmother Marie Louise/Heloise/Eloisa Kennedy y Massicot appears on the 1850 census with her family.

There, she is the only Massicot that is a child. She lived on the plantation of Jacques Massicot, and it is possible that he is her uncle, and that Aimee or Heloise is her mother. Aimee’s husband (or future husband), Francois Reibaud, who was French, is also on the census. But Heloise would’ve been 15 when she had Marie if she is the mother.

I don’t know why it is assumed she was part Irish. Maybe her father was an African-American (hence why her parents never married).

So she is Jewish and Spanish…

But Cheryl Cole and Victoria Beckham aren’t?

ashash April 2, 2015 at 9:15 am

Thought you said Cheryl was Anglo-Indian?

At any rate, Cheryl and Victoria are not Jewish and Spanish.

Capricious October 9, 2015 at 1:14 am

Anglo Indian, Spanish, Jewish…they all somehow resemble each other to an extent.

I know that they’re not. But how do YOU know? They could be hiding their ethnicity.

Helena looks Spanish and Jewish. I really don’t see Irish or English in her.

“Anglo Indian, Spanish, Jewish…they all somehow resemble each other to an extent.” They don’t, sorry.

phaedra April 25, 2016 at 12:19 am

They do. You’re just a butthurt Greek/Southern European who gets pissed when someone says that a Semitic looking person, or an Anglo-Indian like Ben Kingsley, look Greek or Italian, because you have inferiority complex and think that your people look like Nordics.

andrew April 25, 2016 at 1:58 am

Ben Kingsley looks anything Greek or Italian.

“Anglo Indian, Spanish, Jewish…they all somehow resemble each other” … Can we start a kickstarter campaign to get this guy a pair of glasses?

neiltennant July 20, 2017 at 2:53 pm

CHERYL COLE ,, iranian or spanish or indian”

neiltennant September 19, 2016 at 10:41 am

there is a chance that VICTORIA BECKHAM has something indian in her

anen87 March 27, 2016 at 7:58 pm

LOL I don’t think 6.25% makes anyone Spanish. Helena is an English Jewish gal

neiltennant January 1, 2018 at 12:39 pm

you can see very well that she is not ENGLISH pure but has Jewish roots

sarahle February 18, 2015 at 12:17 pm

she is such a great actress… best best best.

[email protected] June 26, 2013 at 12:12 am

she looks Jewish.

andrew July 7, 2013 at 12:41 pm

enough English to play Queen Elizabeth from British Royal Family

follers July 7, 2013 at 11:30 pm

Well, Colin Firth’s character’s mother in that movie was played by Claire Bloom, who is Jewish. So there is nothing wrong with British Jewish royals.

The young Queen Elizabeth II looked like Amy Winehouse.

theropod June 26, 2013 at 12:09 am

Definitely very Spanish and Jewish looking.

[email protected] June 26, 2013 at 12:11 am

yeah i agree with you she looks more Jewish to me.

levangelista36 August 4, 2012 at 7:06 pm

Is Tim Burton Jewish as well?

levangelista36 August 4, 2012 at 9:04 pm

He isn’t. I thought he would for sure be.

Bob Dylan is, though.

levangelista36 August 4, 2012 at 7:05 pm

I thought Helena was Jewish, but I did not know she was part Spanish. I didn’t expect that.

DMama February 6, 2011 at 10:10 am

This was fun to find out. My daughter is always told she looks like Helena and it turns out we share all of her ethnicities on her Mom’s side.

katie October 5, 2010 at 6:27 pm

my favourite actress in the world.

levangelista36 August 4, 2012 at 7:10 pm

She’s certainly unique. I loved her in Fight Club.

Mia July 17, 2010 at 5:57 pm

Wow she’s a lot!
