Franz Kafka was a Czech, German-language, writer of novels and short stories. He is regarded as one of the major figures of 20th-century literature.

Franz was the son of Julie (Löwy) and Hermann Chaim Kafka. His family was Jewish. His father was born in Osek, Strakonice, South Bohemia. His mother was born in Central Bohemia.

Franz’s paternal grandparents were Jacob Amschel Kafka (the son of Josef/Joseph Kafka and Marianna/Anna/Maria Stein) and Franziska Platowski (the daughter of Jacob Platowski and Anna Ratzek).

Franz’s maternal grandparents were Jacob Löwy (the son of Josef Löwy and Katherina Wiener) and Esther Porias (the daughter of Adam Amschel Porias and Sara). Adam was the son of Isaak/Isaac Porias and Sara.
