Franz Kafka was a Czech, German-language, writer of novels and short stories. He is regarded as one of the major figures of 20th-century literature.

Franz was the son of Julie (Löwy) and Hermann Chaim Kafka. His family was Jewish. His father was born in Osek, Strakonice, South Bohemia. His mother was born in Central Bohemia.

Franz’s paternal grandfather was Jacob Amschel Kafka (the son of Josef/Joseph Kafka and Marianna/Anna/Maria Stein/Pollak). Jacob was born in Osek.

Franz’s paternal grandmother was Franziska Platowski (the daughter of Jacob Platowski and Katharina Anna Ratzek). Franziska was born in Osek. Jacob was the son of Wolf Platovsky.
