Being Jewish isn’t exactly a race or a religion. The Jews are a “people”, hence the Jewish people, or Am Israel, the People of Israel. You can be Jewish with respect to your religion (by birth or by choice—either way), or you can be Jewish ethnically (descendant of a Jew—either a born Jew or converted Jew). The descent is usually based on matrilineality, but can also be based upon patrilineality for some non-Orthodox Jews. Besides this, there are many non-sectarian Jews who could care less what some rabbi says about the validity of his/her Jewish heritage. Who died and made them God anyways.

From what I understand, when people say “of Jewish descent”, it’s used to refer to most of Eastern Europe. The borders for countries in the area were always changing, and there aren’t many better ways of tracing origin in those areas, since so many records were destroyed during WWII.

As has been stated on this site before, Jewish is NOT an ethnicity. It’s a religion. There’s a difference.

Jewish is as ethnocity, because Jews are people who were born to Jewish family or have some Jewish background or lineage and they haven’t to profess judaism.

Yes, it is. Jewish is the only religion that is also an ethnicity. It is the only religion you are born into. Christians are baptized, to become a Muslim you have to pronounce the Shahaadatayn, to be Buddhist you must practice the philosophy…and so on. If your mom is Jewish you are Jewish. The end. All ethnic Jews (and by ETHNIC that is people who are born Jewish and did not convert to the RELIGION) originate from the same 12 tribes from one place in the world (the area of the world we refer to as Israel). Therefore, it is an ethnicity as well as a religion. There are people who are Jewish who don’t practice the religion. But they’re still Jewish.

But here’s the thing, the first jews were not white. Many of the jews today are descendants of converts,so whose to say who is a real jew? Also don’t say they tested them, because like with every test, they take a small group. Then it’s can be asked who they chose.
