12th Annual Hollywood Film Festival Award Show After Party - Arrivals

Birth Name: Brandon James Routh

Place of Birth: Norwalk, Iowa, U.S.

Date of Birth: October 9, 1979

Ethnicity: English, Scottish, German, distant Dutch

Brandon Routh is an American actor and model. He played Clark Kent/Superman in the 2006 film Superman Returns.

Brandon Routh is of English, Scottish, German, and distant Dutch, ancestry. He has also stated:

I’m Chickapoo [Kickapoo, a Native American tribe], watered down quite a bit, on my father’s side.

It is not clear if this Native American ancestry has been documented/verified. All of Brandon’s paternal grandparents, great-grandparents, and great-great-grandparents are listed as “White” on United States Censuses.

Brandon is married to actress Courtney Ford, with whom he has a son.

Brandon’s patrilineal line can be traced back to Lawrence Routh, who was born, c. 1660, in Yorkshire, England, and to Lawrence’s wife, Anne Metcalfe, who was born, c. 1665, also in Yorkshire.

Brandon’s paternal grandfather was Amor Ellis Routh (the son of Pearl V. Routh and Ruth Estelle Conger/Congar). Amor was born in Iowa. Pearl was the son of Joshua Routh and Emma Etta Lydia Neeley. Ruth was the daughter of Revillo/Reville/Reinllo Spencer Conger and Sarah Emma Whitaker.

Brandon’s paternal grandmother was Velma Mae/May Junkin (the daughter of Joy McQuie Junkin and Ada Lowdema “Addie” Morgan). Velma was born in Iowa. Joy was the son of George Thompson Junkin and Mary McQuie; Mary’s parents, Peter McQuie and Isabella McCulloch, were Scottish. Brandon’s great-grandmother Ada was the daughter of Alexander L. Morgan and Viola June Clearwater.

Brandon’s maternal grandfather was John Junior Lear (the son of John Lear and Madge Lavinia Phipps). Brandon’s grandfather John was born in Iowa. Brandon’s great-grandfather John was the son of Peter Lear, a German immigrant, and of Lizzie Henderson. Madge was the daughter of Charles Rush Phipps and Alice May Campbell.

Brandon’s maternal grandmother was Viola Lorraine Brown (the daughter of Leigh Alfred/B. Brown and Edith Bell Brandon). Viola was born in Iowa. Leigh was the son of Daniel Ephraim Brown (whose parents, George Christian Braun/Brown and Anna Catherine Wilhelmina Jenss, were German), and of Viola Adelpha Ballou (whose “Ballou” line originates with an English immigrant, William Ballou, from Devonshire). Brandon’s great-grandmother Edith was the daughter of William Martin Brandon and Elizabeth Caroline Van Winkle; Brandon’s great-great-grandmother Elizabeth was the daughter of Oliver Perry Van Winkle and Irene Cox.

One of Brandon’s direct matrilineal ancestors is a woman named Hannah Brewster, who was born, c. 1688, in Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts, to Wrestling Brewster and Mary Holland. Hannah’s paternal great-grandfather was William Brewster (c. 1566-1644), a Mayflower passenger and noted Pilgrim. Among many of William’s other descendants are actors Jordana Brewster, Paget Brewster, Chevy Chase, Taylor Lautner, and Seth MacFarlane, soccer player Clint Dempsey, Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld, U.S. Vice Presidents Hannibal Hamlin and Nelson Rockefeller, and Governor of Arkansas Winthrop Rockefeller.

he was the worst Superman ever

M May 31, 2015 at 8:44 am

Looks part Native American or Asian

luckystar June 4, 2017 at 11:13 am

Nah, he looks Atlantid. Could be Southern european and dark English.

celebfan April 5, 2015 at 10:05 am

I’ve read in some places that Brandon Routh has some French-Canadian ancestry. That would explain his dark features.

follers April 5, 2015 at 10:12 am

He doesn’t.

guyinsf March 24, 2016 at 12:10 am

I have read that too but remember lots of French Canadians are very nordic looking too with blond hair and blue eyes so even if he does have FC blood in him his dark features wouldn’t necessarily be from his FC side and their are darker types in some his other ethnicities too.

jokin March 2, 2015 at 9:44 am

He can be fully White and apparently he is, no doubt about this. Whites may have different shapes, features and colours (eyes, hair, skintone etcc.), anyone who visits europe (where White people originally come from) will realise this. You will get to see more blonde and blue eyed in the scandinavian countries and more brunette and Brown/hazel eyed in the south, but they are all White.

Jello February 2, 2015 at 10:42 pm

There is no way that he is fully white. He looks Native American or part Asian.

theropod April 1, 2015 at 6:35 am

Exactly. Same thing with Jimmy Fallon.

They have a “Native” look to them.

J.J. November 25, 2014 at 8:45 pm

after having read the information listed below i see he’s stated he has native american which makes a lot more sense, he has dark hair & dark eyes, somewhat of a broad chin and nose, honestly like look at him, no one of 100% english, scottish, german or dutch descent has hair and eyes as dark as that. Why do we ignore celebrity statements about their bloodline just because it’s not “thoroughly documented” when it’s obvious in their appearance

follers November 25, 2014 at 9:16 pm

“Why do we ignore celebrity statements about their bloodline just because it’s not “thoroughly documented” when it’s obvious in their appearance”

Because there’s not a shred of evidence that he has Native American ancestors within the level of his parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and great-great-grandparents (in fact, it’s documented that none of them were Native Americans). Almost certainly, none of his great-great-great-grandparents were Native American either. And being 1/64th Native American (of which there is no proof that he is) would have no effect on his physical appearance. So it doesn’t even matter (for the purposes of this discussion) whether or not he is 1/64th Native American (which, again, there is no proof of either).

follers November 25, 2014 at 9:25 pm

BTW, here is his father:

Here is his mother:

Video of his mother:

Remember, Routh said that the alleged Native American ancestry is on his father’s side, not his mother’s. His mother is definitely darker than his father.

J.J. November 25, 2014 at 10:43 pm

ok fair call, his mother certainly looks mixed, still there could be something unknown on her side

follers November 25, 2014 at 11:11 pm

His mother’s ancestry has been documented.

Any of these “uknown” ancestors, if they existed, would be something like 1/128th of Brandon’s ancestry.

andrew November 27, 2014 at 3:37 pm

well, I cant open his dad’s pic, btw he looks a bit like his mother. That colouring is something that can happen in people of British Isles descent, and very often in show-biz, because for some reason this look is considered more attactive (expecially in men). Think about Cary Grant or Humphrey Bogart for example

J.J. December 1, 2014 at 6:52 pm

yeah see i don’t think any of those celebrities look british either, but yet they are, what can you do

Check7t December 6, 2014 at 1:56 pm

There’s no really set ‘British Isles look’ they vary in phenotype from pasty gingers to darker Med types.

luckystar June 4, 2017 at 11:16 am

“no one of 100% english, scottish, german or dutch descent has hair and eyes as dark as that”

Have you ever heard abou Jake bugg? There are a lot of British people with dark brown hair like him
And he looks a bit Brazilian actor Reynaldo Gianecchini(fully Italian)

J.J. November 24, 2014 at 6:20 pm

he looks italian or iberian, hands down

follers November 24, 2014 at 6:50 pm

What famous Italians and Iberians does he remind you of?

He looks like Anne Hathaway and Jonathan Bennett.

J.J. November 25, 2014 at 4:02 am

i don’t think he looks like either of those two actors, nor does he look like any of the ethnicities listed above

follers November 25, 2014 at 4:26 am

You keep writing “ethnicities listed above”, “ethnicities listed here”, etc. to imply whoever you’re talking about is really some other unknown ethnic group, despite their lineage being extremely well documented (i.e. Routh and Jennifer Lawrence). Genius.

J.J. November 25, 2014 at 6:10 am

I’m stating my opinion of what i think they look via educated guess, i doubt it’s possible to know every single bit of a person’s ancestry and there is such thing as recessive genes. I’m not however saying their ethnicities are listed wrong, I’m just saying whether or not I think the celebrity looks it

follers November 25, 2014 at 6:22 am

I don’t get the recessive genes part. Typically, whoever you’re talking about looks like their parents. Also, recessive genes are usually blue eyes and other light features (and have to be carried by both parents to appear).

Check7t November 25, 2014 at 6:47 pm

Agreed, but dissent with “nor does he look like any of the ethnicities listed above” as he could pass for British Isles Med.

follers November 25, 2014 at 6:47 pm

He doesn’t have to “pass” for it, he is it.

celebfan October 21, 2014 at 9:43 pm

There is no mention of his mother’s family tree. Her maiden name is Lear, which is German. Brandon Routh looks like he has French-Canadian ancestry, as well.

Check7t November 22, 2014 at 4:28 pm

“looks like he has French-Canadian ancestry”

He looks French to me in general.

follers November 23, 2014 at 9:43 pm

He has no French ancestry. Both sides of his family up now.

Interestingly, both his patrilineal and matrilineal lines go back to England.

Check7t November 24, 2014 at 3:10 pm

It said he had French ancestry a couple days ago…

follers November 24, 2014 at 3:18 pm

I know. That’s what it used to say, along with the Native American and the rest.

McFarland20 October 8, 2014 at 9:02 pm

Who ever said Europeans cant look “exotic”, whatever you you think that means.

ashash June 24, 2014 at 6:28 am

He is exotic-looking like Brenton Thwaites.

roman2886 March 25, 2014 at 1:52 pm

His ancestry is originally English Scottish French German and Native American he has no Welsh ancestry most Americans have English Irish Scottish and German ancestry not many Americans have Welsh ancestry not even a drop i can’t believe some Americans not have a drop of Irish ancestry.

celebfan October 21, 2014 at 9:41 pm

Morgan is common Welsh surname, so his paternal grandmother definitely had Welsh ancestry on her mother’s side.

celebfan March 23, 2014 at 7:49 pm

His father’s name is Ronald Wayne Routh and his mother’s maiden name is Catherine Lear. Lear is a name of German origin.

JohnC March 24, 2014 at 11:36 am

The surnames Routh and Lear are of British origin.
