Bertolt Brecht was a German theatre practitioner, playwright, and poet.

Bertolt was the son of Wilhelmine Friederike Sophie (Brezing), from Roßberg, Ebsdorfergrund, Gießen, Hessen, and Berthold Friedrich Brecht, from Achern, Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg.

Bertolt was married to actress Helene Weigel, until his death. He had a son with his former partner Paula Banholzer; a daughter, actress Hanne Hiob, with his former wife, opera singer and actress Marianne Zoff; and two children, poet, critic and scholar of theatre Stefan Brecht and actress Barbara Brecht-Schall, with Helene. Helene’s father was killed in the Holocaust.

Bertolt’s paternal grandfather was named Stephan Berthold Brecht.

Bertolt’s paternal grandmother was named Karoline Wurzler.

Bertolt’s maternal grandfather was named Joseph Friedrich Brezing (the son of Christian Gottlieb Brezing). Christian was the son of Georg Friedrich Brezing.

Bertolt’s maternal grandmother was Friederike Gamerdinger (the daughter of Johannes Gamerdinger and Elisabetha Eberhardina Böpple). Johannes was the son of Johannes Gamerdinger.
