Max Landis is an American screenwriter, director, producer, and comic book writer. He directed and wrote the film Me Him Her, wrote the films Chronicle (2012), American Ultra, Mr. Right, Victor Frankenstein (2015), and Bright (2017), and co-wrote the film Shadow in the Cloud. He also wrote limited series for DC Comics and Image Comics, created the show Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, which he also wrote for; co-wrote the episode Masters of Horror: Deer Woman; and wrote the episode Fear Itself: Something with Bite.
Max is the son of director and producer John Landis and costume designer, author, and professor Deborah Nadoolman Landis. He has a sister, Rachel.
Max’s paternal grandfather was Marshall Landis (the son of Maxwell Landis and Muriel Davidson). Maxwell was born in Russia. Muriel was the daughter of Jacob Davidson and Pearl Stone.
Max’s paternal grandmother was Shirley Magaziner (the daughter of Harry Arthur Magaziner and May Potasky). Shirley was born in Ohio. Harry was born in Ohio, the son of Russian Jewish parents, Benjamin/Bernard/Bono Magaziner and Lena Speck.
