He was known as “Samdech Euv” in Cambodia, meaning “King Father” in Khmer.

He was the son of Norodom Suramarit, who was King of Cambodia, from 3 March, 1955 to 3 April, 1960, and Sisowath Kossamak (Sisowath Monivong Kossamak Nearirath Serey Vathana), who was Queen of Cambodia, from 20 June, 1960 to 9 October, 1970. He had two children with his former wife Phat Kanhol; seven children with his former wife Sisowath Pongsanmoni; one child with Sisowath Monikessan, to whom he was married until her death; two children with his former wife Mam Manivan Phanivong; and two children with Norodom, including Norodom Sihamoni, who succeeded him as King of Cambodia, on 14 October, 2004.

Sihanouk’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced to his 19th great-grandfather, Trosok Peam (Ponhea Chey), a cucumber gardener who ruled Khmer Empire from 1336 to 1340 after assassinating his predecessor, Jayavarman IX.

Sihanouk’s paternal grandfather was Norodom Sothearos (the son of Ang Voddey, later Norodom of Cambodia, and of Bossaba Yem). Sihanouk’s great-grandfather Norodom was King of Cambodia, from 19 October, 1860 to 24 April, 1904. He was the son of Ang Duong, who was King of Cambodia, from 1841 to 1844, and again, from 1845 to 18 October, 1860; and of Pen. Bossaba Yem was the daughter of bureaucrat Yia Abhaiwongse and Tim Bunnag.

Sihanouk’s paternal grandmother was Norodom Phangangam (the daughter of Norodom of Cambodia and of Bopha Nuon). Sihanouk’s grandparents Sothearos and Phangangam were half-siblings. Bopha Nuon was the daughter of Lothia Sa.

Sihanouk’s maternal grandfather was Sisowath Monivong (the son of Ang Sar, later Sisowath of Cambodia, and of Van). Sisowath Monivong was born in Khemarin Palace, Phnom Penh, French Cambodia, and was King of Cambodia, from 9 August, 1927 to 23 April, 1941. Sihanouk’s great-grandfather Sisowath was King of Cambodia, from 27 April, 1904 to 9 August, 1927. Sihanouk’s paternal great-grandfather Norodom and maternal great-grandfather Sisowath were brothers. Sihanouk’s great-grandmother Van was the daughter of a bureaucrat.

Sihanouk’s maternal grandmother was Norodom Kanviman Norleak Tevi (the daughter of Norodom Hassakan and Sao Sambhat). Hassakan was the daughter of Norodom of Cambodia and of Mom Yeay. Sambhat was the daughter of Sao and Yura Varman.
