The son of Thomas McGovney, James, is referred to in several documents as McGivney, such as both his passage ticket to America and a reference by his Protestant paster. It’s a County Cavan surname, Mag Dhuimhne. Indeed, McGivney would be pronounced “McGovney” in a thick Belfast accent today, though spelt in the correct manner. Thomas McGovney’s birthplace is given as County Leitrim, which adjoins Cavan.

Typo on the second sentence: “was”
