Lisa Lopes, known as Left Eye and N.I.N.A., was an American hip hop singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer. She was a member of R&B/hip hop girl-group TLC, until her death, with Rozonda Thomas (Chilli) and Tionne Watkins, and, originally, co-founder Crystal Jones. The group was managed by Perri “Pebbles” Reid.
Lisa was the daughter of Wanda Denise (Andino) Coleman and Ronald Eugene Lopes. Her surname, Lopes, is Portuguese, though she may not have had Portuguese ancestry. Lisa and her bandmate Tionne Watkins were cousins through marriage. Lisa’s mother was married to Tionne’s uncle. Lisa had two adopted children.
Lisa’s ancestry was African-American, one eighth Cape Verdean, and one eighth Spanish. Most of the population (about 71%) of Cape Verde is a mix of Sub-Saharan African and European, usually from Portugal and Spain.
Lisa’s paternal grandfather was Charles “Charlie” Lopes (the son of Emanuel/Manuel Lopes and Almira/Alma/Annie Smith). Charles was born in North Carolina. Emanuel likely was born on Cape Verde, and was the son of Charlie Lopes and Lenora. Almira was the daughter of Robert Smith and Hattie Taylor.
Lisa’s paternal grandmother was Gladys Bea/Beatrice Bailey (the daughter of Dennis Gordon and Regenia Bailey). Gladys was born in South Carolina, and was African-American.
Lisa’s maternal grandfather was Jose A. Andino (the son of Jose Andino Andion and The Rev. Helen B. Hewlett, born Helen Bernice Blackston). Lisa’s grandfather Jose was born in Pennsylvania. Lisa’s great-grandfather Jose was born in Asturias, Spain. The Rev. Helen was the daughter of Howard Blackston and Anna Mae Jones, who were African-American.
Lisa’s maternal grandmother was named Lillie.

Left Eye DEFINITELY was NOT from Honduras. I’ve seen her documentary, “The Last Days of Lisa Lopes” multiple times and no where in that documentary did she ever say she is from there.
She started going to Honduras in the late 90’s (1998 I believe) after a major hurricane so she could personally help with relief efforts.

Your right. Unlike these other CLAIMING Lisa was their cousin, She actually was mine and I think about her everyday. Her heritage was Cape Verdean (African and Portuguese Ancestry) And Hispanic.

I (too) saw the documentary that she claims to be Hondurean. When my (cape Verdean) uncle, Lisa’s Great Grandfather came from Fogo, Cape verde Islands, he left three brothers in Massachusetts and moved to kinston, NC..According to his Grandson Anthony they were searching for their roots, they did not know too much about the Cape Verdeans. The family name is deAndrade and not Lopes. It was changed somewhere along the line and Anthony wanted to change it back. If she was of spanish decent Lopes would end in a z.
I guess it does not matter now…..she was a talented woman, taken too soon. May she continue to rest in the peace of our Lord.

I met your grandfather as he visited us in Massachusetts…..we are Cape Verdeans….I was in touch with your Uncle Anthony ( by phone) when I lived in Md. He wanted to know more about the Cape Verdeans, also the name is deAndrade and not Lopes. I met your great grandmother Annie from Kinston, NC and your grandfather Charles when I was in High school. Your aunt Lenora visited us as well in Mattapoisett, MA. I have been trying to research and just found your Uncle Anthony’s obituary. I often wondered why he stopped calling me. I called the number I had in Florida and the women that answered said he no longer lived there.

favorite TLC song, No Scrubs with Left Eye`s rap. Took me back when the
group was together. Dag I do miss her, Left Eye and the group itself. But
anyway, I was thinking about something that got me pretty scared about.

is she going to have an untimely death aswell like Aaliyah or Lisa, and is
her death date going to be on the 25th? Only God knows that, and know when
we all are called HOME, but God forbids, but what if she does die on the 25th of
either April or August, and the same exact way either being killed in an air plane
or car accident ? That right there will be so scarey, to share the exact same
month and date of death and have all of these things in common with Aaliyah
and Lisa. Let me stop right here before I really scare myself.
