La La Anthony, born Alani Nicole Vázquez, and also known as La La Vázquez, is an American radio and television personality, author, businessperson, producer, and actress.

La La was born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, to Puerto Rican (Nuyorican) parents. She has described herself as a “Black-Puerto Rican,” and stated:

I embrace being a Black-Puerto Rican and think we are plentiful and do exist! I am more “black” than people think… Since I don’t look like J-Lo, it’s hard for me to get the Puerto Rican/Latin role in a movie. I speak fluent Spanish, but get cast as being black long before they put me as the Latino.

La La has a son, basketball player Kiyan Anthony, with her former husband, professional basketball player Carmelo Anthony, who is of Puerto Rican and African-American descent.

  2. Mari says:

She’s a Black Puerto Rican. Very Common. The problem with people is that they automatically picture JLo and Marc Anthony. but they are not the Majority of what you see in PR besides the tourist.

    • rafael says:

wait a white puerto rican is a transplant, but a black one is common?have you been to pr? you know the blacks are the minority, right

      • DONT ASK says:

YOU’RE A FUCKING, IDIOT, YOU DO KNOW YOU’RE A FUCKING MINORITY RIGHT??? YOU FUCKING MIGRANT

        • rafael says:

do you know what a migrant is? and what has that to do with anything? and by the way when you have to resort to vulgarity you have lost the arguement.

      • Jarocho says:

whites in puerto rico are only a minority, majority of you people are mixed but like claiming white on the census of your country, how sad when majority of you guys would never fit in Europe

        • MIMIE says:

@rafael: well I have been to PR & dark skin is ABSOLUTLY NOT the minority most people in PR have dark, or brown skin as well as tan but you barely see white skin so idkk wat Puerto Rico you have been to but its not the one I’ve seen…it sucks that everyone thinks that puerto rican all look like jennifer lopez #sigh…GOo PUERTO RICOOOO

  3. 0UTSP0KENGURRRL says:

Why does everyone keep saying, “LaLa is not Black, but Puerto Rican”, “Lala is light-skinned, therefore, she’s mixed or Puerto Rican”, And “Puerto RIcan is a race/ethnicity”?

Uh, hello?! People, it is 2011! Everyone (at least the majority) should know PUERTO RICAN is NOT a RACE, but a PLACE you are FROM! That means either you or your parent(s) are (or use to be) a resident inhabiting the island of Puerto Rico! And you share the attitudes and behavior, belief(s), values, language(s), and so forth as a whole that characterizes your nationality. THIS IS an example of WHAT CULTURE and/or ETHNICITY IS. This is what TIES you to your NATION (i.e. France, Africa, Japan). For instance, if you or your parent(s) are of (the racial terms) African or Black descent, but are natives of a spanish speaking continent or country, then you or your parent(s) are identified (in the U.S.) as a BLACK HISPANIC! It does not matter if you or your parent(s) originated from Mexico, Spain, Panama, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Brazil, or etc.

And according to Edward Tylor, an English anthropologist, “cultural traits are entirely learned.” (1871) – Subsequently, a baby can be placed into another culture shortly after birth and can be thoroughly enculturated to that culture! Regardless of his or her skin color, body shape, and other presumed racial features. In other words, an African (or Black) American woman is far more similar culturally to her European (or White) American neighbors than to the West African woman from Senegal. THis is culture DIFFERNCES between two individuals who are of the same descent, but do not speak the same language nor do they share any other significant cultural patterns due to the fact that they were brought up in very different societies.

And just because someone has a lighter skin complexion (i.e. LaLa, Mya, Lauren London, etc.) does not mean he or she is biracial or mixed. The darkest could be the most mixed or biracial person. For instance, one of my closet friends is mixed, but her skin complexion is the same as Gabrielle Union. However, one of my brothers is the same skin tone as Beyonce, but he is not mixed or biracial. Another example would be on the Tyra Show, in one of her episodes, on biracial girls that hate part of their race, one girl who hates blacks, happened to look black. she did not look like a (generally speaking) light-skinned black (lauren london, beyonce, mya, raven symone, rihanna, halle berry), she looked more like a dark-skinned black (meagan good, gabrielle union, kyla pratt, lola monroe, kim porter, etc). In the United States, the racial classification term “Black” refers to people with ALL possible kinds of skin pigmentation from the darkest through to the very lightest skin colors, INCLUDING albinos, if they are believed by others to have African ancestry and exhibit cultural traits associated with being “African-American”. Therefore, the term ‘black people’ is NOT an indicator of skin color but of racial classification. Basically, if Lala parent(s) is a native of Puerto Rico, but is of African descent, than, racially speaking, she is STILL considered an African/Black American. However, culturally or ethnically speaking, she is a Black Hispanic, Latino/na, or (to be specific) Puerto Rican.

Therefore, I do not understand why everyone is having a fit over her “blackness”, “biracial-ness or mix-ness”, or “hispanic-ness”. I can understand why LaLa would not acknowledge BOTH of her ethnicities. And why she would jump from one ethnic to another. People put so much emphasis on what you racially or ethnically considered yourself. For instance, I am a Black American (non-hispanic) that has a caramel-cappaucino complexion and waist length hair. Specifically (ethnically) speaking, I have a very mixed heritage – African (or Black), Cherokee, and French (mother-side); African (or Black), Creek, and British (father-side). But I was born and raised in a predominately African (or Black) American society. And the fact that NO ONE can DENY my AFRICAN ANCESTRY, I am what you defined as the ‘typical African (or Black) American’ who does not look mix. However, for some unusual reason, some people (often Black) put me in the “mixed” or another category because of my hair/features. For instance, someone asked me if I was “haitian” or “creole”. And being a Black/African American does not deprive you of your OTHER ethnicities. All whites fall into one category – “White”, but still acknowledge their ethnic differences. The same goes for Asians too.

Therefore, PUERTO RICAN does NOT defined the COLOR of your SKIN! It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with a someone’s APPEARANCE or GENETIC MAKE-UP! If it does, then, PLEASE, tell me where it says on your BIRTH CERTIFICATE your RACE is PUERTO RICAN?! Because I do not know ANYONE with a birth certificate that RACIALLY IDENTIFIES him or her as PUERTO RICAN! I’m not trying to be Ms. Know-It-All, but I’m just saying, “do not feed ignorance with ignorance.” That is a very bad habit that many us (humans) possess.

NATIONAILTY – the status of belonging to a particular nation by origin, birth, or naturalization.
CULTURE – the attitudes and behavior that are characteristic of a particular social group or organization.
ETHNIC – relates to cultural factors such as nationality, culture, ancestry, language and beliefs.
RACE – too complex for me to explain, but it mostly deals with what i explained above about the term black in u.s.

..thank you! do people not understand that history of any countries in the americas. puerto rico compared to other countries like cuba, dominican republic, haiti, brazil etc… didn’t have as many slaves but they were still a slave colony.you may find many puerto ricans tht deny their heritage because of racism but let’s face it any history book you read shows that the indigenous race across the caribbean and in north america was pretty much wiped out by the 1700s so the chances of a puerto rican having more native blood in them then african is slim and makes no sense when there was a steady supply of slaves being brought to the islands. I puerto ricans have no african in them then why don’t they look like mestizos from places like mexico and wherever and why is their music so different and their culture have more african in it. matter of fact the majority of the millions of slaves brought to the new world went to brazil (duh anyone can tell that as exotic as brazilian slook) the 2nd largest amount went to the caribbean (puerto rica, cuba, haiti, jamaica, DR, etc..) north america got the least amount of slaves compared to the rest of these countries. they’re still racially mixed, some are taino and spanish, others are african and spanish, others are all 3 some people may not look like they have any african in them but let’s realize the last actual africans that were brought to the new world was centuries ago. these people have centuries of racial mixing to form a new identity and look. anyone that is literally not african is therefore mixed whether we call them black or whatever it’s why all people of african descent in the americas look different than an african. and lala may be “darker” than jlo or whatever but i see tons of darker skinned puerto ricans with a rainbow of diverse looking people in their family. your skin color doesn’t dictate what you’re actually mixed with and if i pulled a nigerian and stood them next to lala they would NOT look the same.

77,000 slaves total were brought to puerto rico, and a steady stream of europeans came to pr and still come to pr.are they black because they came to puerto rico? i know that for some reason blacks are obsessed with making everyone black especially puerto ricans, yes there was race mixing 500 years ago .how is that relevant today when puerto rico has far more recent european blood.or are we to ignore that?do you know puerto ricans are the only ones who can be white and are still told your black, get real so sad

Rafael… Black ppl did not make up the one drop rule on this side of the world. Caucasians did. Black ppl are not “obsessed” about claiming ur ass or anyone else. If you take LaLa and introduce her to any of my Caucasian friends including my Caucasian bf they would say she is black. If I take ur pr ass to the same group they would definitely NOT classify you as a Caucasian. ( assuming you are a light skin pr .. i.e JLo,Ricky Martin). You seem far more OBSESSED…. OBSESSED with being european.. I have been to Spain and they don’t even claim you. Honest to god every time I mentioned learning my Spanish from my pr friends their faces got sour. You ppl are of a mixed heritage .. Some more European looking .. Some more African looking… Some more native looking.. Some look ALL THREE! LaLa won’t be picking cotton but her ass would be in the house cooking & cleaning. Get a grip

          • rafael says:

niki,i never said la la was white.but you did make my point, you said la la was black so you just made her black and claimed her as a house slave.also puerto ricans from the island don’t consider jlo or ricky white.they are tanned, now adamaris lopez or frankie muniz are white.also no way i am not white when i always have to explain to people that i really am pr.also i have been to mexico and it never occured to me to ask if they claim prs.so why would you or anyone go to a foreign country and ask about a group of people? so i call bull on that one.i’m glad you brought up jlo and ricky, because they are bigger in spain than they are in puerto rico.sounds like spain claimed prs.also your friends who you claim are not white ask them what it says under race of their birth certificates.

          • carmen says:

Niki, you offer the smartest and most honest and direct response here. Btw, no one in my family would consider this guy white, even with the light skin Hispanics and other races have physical markers that light skin does not erase. It is sad to see somone plead with others to accept them as something they are not. Lala is also black.

          • carmen says:

this debate reminds me of my ex boyfriend Jose. he told anyone who would listen that he was Spainard and his family roots are in Spain. yet, all his family that he knew was in California or Mexico, in addition he would say there are blue eyed blonde haired Mexicans in Mexico. of course there are. they are people of a European decent that moved to Mexico and maintained the white blood line and they speak spanish. No one ever mistook him for white, not a chance in hell. funny how they latch on to white settlers, then claim blacks are just passing thru but cleary not Hispanic

  5. guy says:

So if a white man says he’s black….or a black man says he’s white then they are correct?

Lets think about what we are saying here. According to some of yall Latinos, I can be black as hell but since I grew up around with a white family, white community, then I will call myself white regardless of my physical looks. Interesting debate???

    • WTF says:

      @guy

Now you know that’s not what they mean, black people have been part of PR’s history since the Spaniards came. Therefore, there are black, white, asian,Tanio, and mixed PR;and whatever other ethnicity is on the island now. Also mixed bloods can be any combo of the people there now
