Eli Roth is an American director, producer, screenwriter, and actor. Initially known as a maker of hard-R horror movies, he has directed the films Cabin Fever (2002), Hostel, Hostel: Part II, The Green Inferno, Knock Knock, Death Wish (2018), The House with a Clock in Its Walls, the documentary Fin; and Thanksgiving (2023). He also wrote his Hostel films; co-wrote his Cabin Fever, The Green Inferno, and Knock Knock, as well as Aftershock (2012), The Man with the Iron Fists, and the remake Cabin Fever (2016); and directed the pilot episodes of the shows Hemlock Grove and South of Hell. He has hosted the shows Eli Roth’s History of Horror and Urban Legend (2022), and co-starred in the films Inglourious Basterds, Aftershock, and Clown (2014).

Eli is the son of Cora, a painter, and Sheldon Roth, a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and clinical professor. He began shooting films at eight years old.

Eli’s paternal grandfather was Milton Morris David Roth (the son of Max Roth and Esther Stella Randel). Milton was born in New York, to parents from Hungary. Max was the son of Herman Roth and Sarah Braun. Esther was the daughter of Pinkas/Pincus Randel/Rendel and Lillian Libbie/Liba Sheufeld.

Eli’s paternal grandmother was Anna Cohen (the daughter of Jacob Cohen and Gussie Rosanoff). Anna was born in New York. Jacob was born in Russia. Gussie was born in Kyiv, the daughter of Bernard Rosanoff and Pearl Goldberg.

Eli’s maternal grandfather was named Philip Bialis/Biolis (the son of Gershon/Harry Bialis and Minnie/Mindel). Philip was born in Podlaskie, Poland.

Eli’s maternal grandmother was Libby/Libbie Lang (the daughter of Isaac/Isak Reuben/Rubin Lang and Chaya Hinde “Annie” Gouldner/Goldner). Libby was born in New York, to parents from Austria.
