Colby’s paternal grandmother was Frances Turner Jackson (the daughter of Charles Edward Jackson and Mary R. Sparklin). Charles was the son of Henry Jackson and Annie M. Saker, who was born in Wales, to an English father and a Welsh mother. Mary was the daughter of Eugene Sparklin and Mary C. Hardesty.

Colby’s maternal grandfather was Thomas Ward Miles (the son of Russell Livingston Miles and Eleanor Kemp Thomas). Russell was the son of John Ward Miles, whose mother was English, and of Mattie Mitchell Kane. Eleanor was the daughter of Edward F. Thomas and Alice Ann Kirtz, and was of mostly German descent.
