Correction – If the individual was from Canada he would be Canadian American or Mexico then he would be Mexican American. This person can’t be Haitian African American, he has to be Haitian American or African American not both! If his family can trace their roots so, he can’t be African American. African Americans are from the continent of Africa not knowing which country from within the continent which they originated. The article said he is from Haiti??? His father is from there so that would make him Haitian.

    • Rotimi says:

      Nice comment by Garry.
Being a Nigerian, i am also quite uncomfortable about all these so-called politically correct ways of addressing black people. Call them blacks, call them African-American, whatever. But what on earth is a Hatian African American???

    • c anthony says:

All black people, whatever their current geographic location, at some point in the past can trace their ancestral roots to Africa. Haitians came from Africa. Black people in all of Latin American originated from Africa. So whether Haitians or others acknowledge their African ancestry in how they choose to identify themselves is irrelevant. In fact, all humans come from Africa–but that is another story.

    • Ox says:

Fucking retard Mexican & Canadian are nationalities .. Not race… Haitian would also be nationality… Black is black

    • Steve says:

All black people originated from Africa. They came over on slave ships hundreds of years ago. Many of them landed on the island of Hispana. So if he has Black roots, and he lives in America, that makes him African American. If his ancestors’ stopped over in Haiti for a few generations, it does not change this. However, it means he can similarly be classified as being Haitian American. It does not take away his African heritage, however.

    • Pam says:

@garry…Everyone is originally from Africa. All roots go back to Egypt, Africa.

These are younger people commenting who do not know ‘everything’ about black history. I was born in the county where my forebears were freed 65 years after word that the Slaves were freed was received in Galveston, TX.

The Whites were always in denial by ‘believing’ there was no race mixing. Most of the White men had two families, one white and one black, in our small town. Relatives who never left the county, now say some of the White remnants now acknowledge that a lot of them are related to Blacks. Blacks always acknowledged the mixing because they were interwoven into our families and communities. In our segregated schools there were always blonds, blue, hazel, and green eyes. My stepfather had green eyes.

Sometimes the mother’s were White. One was in my segregated high school who looked totally White, but her hair was a give-away. She lived with her single mother and White siblings. The White siblings attend the White school a few blocks from our school, but the one in our school was unacceptable in the same White school because she had the proverbial ‘one-drop of Black blood’.

My step father was the son of a Sheriff in a small TX town near Houston, TX. His father had a white family, but he captured my step father’s mother when she was 15 and sired two sons by her who carried his last name. The father also built a home for them and took care of the family. The father shot the mother one time when she was still young and wanted to get away from him to have a life. The sons looked more White than Black and many people did not know unless he told them or he was with us (except Black folk who usually know a white-looking person by looking at them — even if they are passing).

Another one in my family was in a similar situation in TX, and that White father and his brothers won a gun battle with the KKK. That father had built a home for his Black family, and built a smaller one next door for himself, for appearances. I found the two homes with their names in the Census.

My first husband was born in Southern Illinois. When I looked up the Census for his family, I found that his (my 1st spouse) father’s grandfather and grandmother were from Italy. Now, this is in the 1930 Census and the Census was written in cursive writing, so there was no typo. When I told my children, they confronted their grandmother from their father’s side. But the grandmother said they were all sworn to secrecy and would take it to her grave — and she did.

This kind of mixing happened at a time when Blacks were unable to defend themselves and families, unless they wanted to die. After 400-plus years of Slavery the Black race and men were emasculated and dehumanized. It takes much time to overcome such brutalization.

I know many more stories within and without my family, which is too much to handle in this format. I should probably write a book.

I believe that is why High-blood pressure is so high amongst the descendants of the Slaves. Our lives has been riddled with all kinds of adverse oppression.

Many younger White people now question why the descendants of ex-slaves identify ourselves as African-Americans instead of Americans. Well, that is because your White forefathers did not allow us to, just like on the Census, until recent years, we were not allowed to acknowledge any mixed blood. It seems that whites first called us Ni–as, Negroes, Colored; then as the pressured lifted a bit we started calling ourselves African American, Afro-American, etc. You guys never walked in our shoes so you don’t know why ‘we can’t just get over it’. Well it is not that easy getting over where your forebears forced us. They were working on making us become animals to serve them. They had developed a plan to dehumanize us. I believe it is online because it is in book form. That is why some Whites still insist that we are subhuman and unable to learn — still trying to brainwash us.

    ‘Nuff true black history.

Write that book! Shine light on the behaviors of the time. People are people and men are always looking for an easy sexual opportunity. Whoelse could be comprosmised without consequences? Black women. Even the poorest, most powerless white people had power over blacks at the time just because of skin color. It is very sad.

    • Carmelo says:

      Im sorry tl;dr

    • Gemini says:

I dont understand why this comment was disliked so many times. So many people claim that black people bitch and whine but they have no idea what its like to be us and walk a mile in our shoes. They can live in their own communities and never have to deal with we African Americans at all, yet no matter where we go we will have to deal with them and the discriminitive ones will do nothing more than spew their hateful racist vemon in our faces that will do nothing but course its way through our veins and minds and teach us only to hate ourselves and others. I have nothing against anyone except racists, their hate makes me sick to my stomach.
I dont understand how these racist pigs could ever expect us to get over racism, slavery, segregation, and hate when they constantly throw it in our faces every chance they get.

    • My 2 Cents says:

“You should just get over it” is such an oversimplification of the sentiment that we white people feel. It’s not that. What it is, is a sense that “Why should I be punished for something I had nothing to do with?”.

Let me begin by saying that I am not a racist. I take every person as an individual and until they reveal their true intentions I’m willing to hear them out & treat them as equals. If they prove to be a decent human being then I will treat them as a decent human being.

The problem is that the overwhelming majority of the time the stereotypes and racist mindsets are proven and re-proven over and over again, and those of you railing against racism just give the overt racists more ammunition on a daily basis. There’s a reason that stereotype exists it’s up to you not to play into it.

And lets not deceive ourselves here, racism is a two-way street. I’ve met just as many racist blacks, mexicans, asians as I have white racists. Actually, scratch that … in this day & age I see more of them than I see white counterparts. And their racism is far more pervasive than what I see in the white community. But their racism is given a free pass because “oh well they had it hard” or it’s insensitive for me to expect them to “just get over it” (as was mentioned before and countless times in the past). So that excuses it?

As an extreme example of this “reverse racism” that I refer to, Google the case of the brutal rape & murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom and try to tell me that wasn’t racially motivated. The official stance is that media did not gloss over this, but they did. I’m sure that many of you have never even heard those names. This was a horrific & deplorable act committed on a completely innocent couple. This actually happened, this is real and it occurred during my lifetime, to my generation … but I suppose that I should “just get over it”.

Racism will always be around, it’s never going away. I don’t expect anyone to “just get over it”. Your ancestors suffered, I understand that & accept it. But you don’t really know me; you see white skin and think it’s all sunshine and jellybeans. My ancestors suffered as well, wanna know more … just ask me; but I’ve never oppressed you or made you suffer. Let’s all make an effort to learn from the past and try to forge ahead. It’s true that if you forget the past you’re doomed to repeat it, but don’t let that memory of the past ruin your future. I do expect you to treat me with respect & I, in turn, will respect you; but you don’t get a gold star just for showing up. Respect is not given automatically, it’s earned.

There’s a reason that stereotype exists it’s up to you not to play into it.”
I suppose we gave you more ammunition to fire your gun at us once more. It always seems as though every race would like to have a play at the victim card at some point which is very childish. “oh well they had it hard” is an imaginary excuse which I have never heard pass a white racist’s lips. If you yourself are not a racist then do not attempt to soften the discriminatory stool those pigs excrete. Attempting to victimize yourself and the white race does not help your cause.
You contradicted your point when you said “Your ancestors suffered, I understand that & accept it. But you don’t really know me; you see white skin and think it’s all sunshine and jellybeans. My ancestors suffered as well, wanna know more … just ask me; but I’ve never oppressed you or made you suffer.” If you do not wish to be put in the same category as the racists who had oppressed and continue to oppress people of African descent then why put yourself with them?
You reversed the situation to make it seem as though you are the one suffering discrimination. Reverse racism IS racism and you simply reversed it yourself. We all suffer and are all discriminated against, that is no excuse to play victim. As you said we must move forward so that we do not repeat our past but making ourselves victims will not help the cause. You are not white people, you are a white person. I am not black people, I am a black person. We are different people who endure different hardships, end of story.

according to the u.s. census bureau, approximately 5% of americans are of mixed races. it was not but 50 years ago when it was still a crime to have interracial marriages/relationships/children in america. so when we hear politicians saying we want to take america back… doe they mean back to when it was illegal to mix races… a perhaps come out with a great basketball player like blake griffin? love conquers all adversities, i really believe that.

    • wtf says:

      @leslie

it was illegal back in the day,but not 50yrs ago.Plus it never stop it from going on.Also mixed kids outside of marriage has been going on since everyone got here, even before that like for thousands of years

      • Wtf says:

@Leslie:my fault babygirl,I see what your talking about, when it became fully legal in all the states.btw what I had said was not an attack towards you, sorry if it reads the wrong way.One other thing, don’t pay to much attention to the census, most black people just say AA no matter what their mixs is.Then you have black people who pass as white, and say they are.I think even white people who are majority white, just say white

Taking back America has nothing to do with race, gender, etc. It has to do with getting back to our form of government from the beginning which is capitalism, not socialism. We do not want to end up like Europe, taxed up to their eye balls and no where to go but down hill.

      • Kim says:

@Vee, “taking back America has nothing to do with race, gender, etc.” Black people know that this is a bald face lie. Not naive at all.

        • brandon says:

hey it isn’t about race it’s about getting our government back on the right track also, how did the talk about blake griffen lead to the topic of race?!

      • Jon says:

Kim your an idiot capitalism creates jobs socialism restricts employers from keeping employees and hiring. Read macro and mico economics and you would have a clue why your a dumbass. You need half of your brain removed and eat food intravenously or something. Just dont vote again for the countrys sake.
