Sharon den Adel is a Dutch singer, songwriter, and fashion designer. She is the lead vocalist and one of the main songwriters of the symphonic metal band Within Temptation. Her bandmates include/included her partner Robert Westerholt and Robert’s brother Martijn Westerholt. She is nicknamed “The Ice Queen” and “Mother of Dragons.”

Sharon is the daughter of Willemina (van Prooijen) den Adel-van Prooijen and Eduard Martinus “Ed” den Adel. She was raised in many countries, partly in Indonesia and Suriname. Sharon has three children with Robert Westerholt.

Sharon’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to her eighth great-grandfather, Peter Dirkszn den Adel.

Sharon’s paternal grandfather was Hendrik den Adel (the son of Dirk Christoffel Martinus den Adel and Johanna Jacoba Maria Veenenbos). Hendrik was born in Gouda, South Holland. Dirk was the son of Leendert Walraven den Adel and Johanna Maria Theresia Legerstee. Sharon’s great-grandmother Johanna was the daughter of Theodorus Hendrikus Veenenbos and Elizabeth Maria van Vliet.

Sharon’s paternal grandmother was Jansje Bernardina Leegwater (the daughter of Nicolaas Jacob Karl Leegwater and Rika Aletta Fijth). Jansje was born in Amsterdam. Nicolaas was the son of Pieter Leegwater and Jansje Bos. Rika was the daughter of Christiaan Fijth and Bernardina Johanna Hoonhout.
