    His mother’s name is Georgeta Orlovschi. Sebastian said in an interview that she and his father divorced when he was two.

      And his dad’s name is said to be Tino, which I think is short for Costin.

      I can’t help but wonder if his mom has some distant Russian or Ukrainian with that surname.

        @bablah

        Orlovschi is a Moldavian surname

          The difference between Romanian and Moldovan is the same as that between German and Swiss-German. Only a border and national identity, that is. So I’d say you can’t talk about “Moldovan surnames” in that way.

          Orlovskiy is a Slavic last name. Orlovschi is just a Romanian way of spelling (like for instance Serbian Dragić would be Draghici in Romanian).

          And as madman said, Moldovans are just Romanians who were under USSR, there’s no difference between them (except maybe in accent, Moldovans have a Russian sounding accent).

            yes, it’s of Slavic origin but mostly prevalent in Moldova.

            I came across this because yesterday I had a discussion with a Romanian woman from a little town on Black Sea, who told me about her upbringing in a meltin pot made by minorities like Bulgars, Tatars, Gypsies and Moldovans.

            Only if you’re looking at that specific spelling.
            Like all the people with last name Miscavage are American, but the original last name Miśkiewicz is Polish.

            Anyway, Ukrainians are the largest minority in Moldova (11% according to 2004 census), so it’s not surprising there are many people with a Slavic last name there.

            Is legit a “possibly other” for him? He’s not just Romanian.

    Just out of curiosity, is there anything known about his father? I’m aware that it sounds like he was brought up solely by his mother but it doesn’t hurt to ask! (:

    His name sounds German to me.

    His star is rising. He could become the most famous Romanian native since Nadia Comăneci.
