Actually Nathan, about a 1/4 of all British people have at least 1 Irish grandparent in the major cities.

so true paul, the irish immigration to Great Britain is actually the third largest in the world, after turks in germany and mexicans in america, and that 6 million english people have an Irish grandparent. It was listed in a major UK newspaper last year and on wikipedia

I live in Manchester, in North West England which has a high percentage of Irish ancestry, most people i know have either an Irish parent or grandparent like myself, and is rather full of Irish travellers. However, england in a way is full of different ethicities and ancestries as england was invaded multiple times by the Romans (italians), Vikings (scandiavians), Normans (french) and Saxons (germans), so in a way, there is no such way as being full blood english.

        Thank you!

I’ve been trying to get that point across.. Even with links and such, Nathan refused to believe me. xD
I have cousins in Manchester. (:

The whole ‘typical English look is blonde hair and blue eyes’ is nonsense too, imo. There are more blue-eyed people in Ireland, which to be honest, might contribute to the blue-eyed people in England as a lot of them have Irish blood.

My surname is Norman.. Weren’t the Normans French of Scandinavian descent?

        • amy says:

They were descended from Viking conquerors of the territory and the native population of mostly Frankish and Gallo-Roman stock. Their identity emerged initially in the first half of the tenth century, and gradually evolved over succeeding centuries until they disappeared as an ethnic group in the early thirteenth century. The name “Normans” derives from “Northmen” or “Norsemen”, after the Vikings from Scandinavia who founded Normandy.

My grandmas maiden name was Norman too (Luxford), she traced back to 1066 Battle of Hastings, where my descendant was a norman knight, funnily enough she lives in Hastings now :)

That’s the same in every European country, however! All of them have had multiple migrations/invasions since the neolithic, so NO ONE is ‘full blood.’ That is why ALL native Europeans have only the same 9 foremothers and around the same forefathers; Swedes share the same dna as Italians etc. And even with various migrations, it does not mean the original settlers of any given country were obliterated; most people in the British isles who are natives will have some ancestry from before the Roman invasion.
