Michael is the son of Virginia Ruth (Cahill) and William Oscar Gross. His sister is actress and comedian Mary Gross. He is married to casting director Elza Bergeron.

Michael’s paternal grandfather was Chester Samuel Gross (the son of Oscar Gross and Mary Ellen Dowling). Chester was born in Iowa. Oscar was the son of John William Gross and Isabell Cutbirth. Mary Ellen was the daughter of Sam Dowling and Mary Mackey.
