MF DOOM was an English-born rapper and music producer. He was a leading figure of underground and alternative hip hop. Known for his metal mask and resultant supervillain persona, emulating Marvel villain Doctor Doom, he was recognized for his unique lyrical and production style; which included complex wordplay and references to other comic book characters and television shows. He began his rap career as a member of trio KMD, under the name Zev Love X. His brother, DJ Subroc, was also a member of the group; KMD disbanded after Subroc’s death. Re-emerging in the late 1990s, he was also known as King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, Metal Fingers, Doom, Metal Face, and, in collaboration, Madvillain, with Madlib; Danger Doom, with Danger Mouse; JJ Doom, with Jneiro Jarel; NehruvianDoom, with Bishop Nehru; and Czarface.
MF DOOM was the son of Ashlyn and Daniel J. Dumile. His father was born in Zimbabwe. His mother was born on Trinidad and Tobago. MF DOOM’s birth record lists his birth name as Dumile Daniel Thompson. This was possibly an error as public records list his name as Daniel Thompson Dumile. A picture of MF DOOM’s brother with their father can be seen here.
MF DOOM was born in London, England, while his mother was visiting family. He grew up in Long Beach, Nassau, Long Island, New York, and never acquired a green card or U.S. citizenship. In 2010, he was refused re-entry into the U.S. after traveling to Europe, and was deported to the U.K., subsequently living there. MF Doom was married to Jasmine Dumile, until his death, with whom he had five children.
MF DOOM’s maternal grandfather was Joseph Thompson (the son of James Thompson and Ellen Brereton). Joseph was born in Saint Patrick, Trinidad and Tobago. Ellen was born on Barbados.
MF DOOM’s maternal grandmother was Henrietta Mathews/Matthew (the daughter of Henry Mathews/Matthew and Sarah/Christina McFarlane). Henrietta was born in Penal, Saint Patrick, Trinidad and Tobago.
