Gordie Howe was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played for the Detroit Red Wings, the Houston Aeros, and the Hartford Whalers. He was nicknamed “Mr. Hockey.” He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.

Gordie’s father, Albert Clarence Howe, was born in Wisconsin, U.S., to Canadian parents, from Ontario. Gordie’s mother, Katherine “Kate” (Schultz), was a German emigrant, from Stuttgart. Gordie’s younger brother was professional ice hockey player Vic Howe. Gordie was married to sports agent Colleen Howe, until his death. The couple had four children, including professional hockey players Marty Howe and Mark Howe.

Gordie’s paternal grandfather was James Howe (the son of James Howe and Mary Elizabeth Beswick). Gordie’s grandfather James was born in Belleville, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. Gordie’s great-grandfather James was born in Nymet Tracey (now part of Bow), Devon, England, the son of William Howe and Elizabeth Heard. Gordie’s great-grandmother Elizabeth was also English, and was the daughter of Thomas Beswick and Mary Wain.

Gordie’s paternal grandmother was Eliza Jane Garrison (the daughter of Nathan Garrison and Electa Jane Burleigh). Eliza was born in Belleville, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. Nathan was the son of Gideon Garrison and Hannah Salisbury. Electa was the daughter of Ira Burleigh and Miranda B. Potter.

Gordie’s maternal grandfather was named Leonard Schultz.

Gordie’s maternal grandmother was named Anna Yuchum/Juchim.
