Carmine’s father has Italian ancestry. Carmine’s mother is of half Norwegian and approximately half English descent, with remote Scottish ancestry on that side. Carmine is also said to have Native American ancestry. It is not clear if this Native American ancestry has been verified/documented.

Carmine has said:

My grandfather spoke Italian… He came over from Naples… The boat that he took left Naples [in] 1923… He arrived here in May, just two years after my grandfather from Oslo, Norway arrived here in May of 1921.

Carmine’s paternal grandfather possibly was Domenico Giovinazzo. Domenico was from San Giorgio Morceto, Calabria, Italy.

Erling was born in Lilleaker, Ullern, Christiania (present-day Oslo), Norway. Karl was born in Barum, Bærum, the son of Kristian Johansen Lysaker and Kristine Kristoffersdatter Gjestadeje. Gjertrud was born in Dolm, Hitra, the daughter of Jakob Andreas Pedersen Aunet/Jektvik and Kristina Kristofferdatter Kvalvik.

Carmine’s maternal grandmother was Esther Louise “Essie” Young (the daughter of Herbert Shelton Young and Mina B. Blaisdell). Esther was born in Hancock, Maine, and had English, and remote Scottish, ancestry. Herbert was the son of Calvin Berry Young and Lillian A. Hodgkins. Mina was the daughter of Enoch W. Blaisdell and Eunice A. French.
