William’s mother is Canadian and American, and was born in California, to a father of Chinese descent and a mother of Finnish and English ancestry. William’s maternal grandmother was Patricia Ann Tilly (the daughter of Ray Virgil Tilly and Ellen Anna Flinkman). Patricia was born in Illinois. Ray was born in Illinois, the son of Van Buren/Vanburen/Vanburin Tilly/Tilley and Elizabeth Tucker. Ellen was born in Issaquah, King, Washington, to Finnish parents, Jacob Flinkman and Josephine/Justina Adalina Maki.
