William A. Wheeler was an American politician and attorney. He served as Vice President of the United States, from March 4, 1877 to March 4, 1881. He was elected to the position in 1876. He was also a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, from March 4, 1861 to March 3, 1863, and again, from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1877. He was a member of the Whig Party, then a member of the Republican Party.
Vice President Wheeler was the son of Eliza H. and Almon Wheeler. He was married to Mary King, until her death.
Vice President Wheeler’s paternal grandfather was Zalmon Wheeler (the son of Joseph Wheeler and Frances Hill). Zalmon was born in Connecticut. Joseph was the son of Joseph Wheeler and Abigail Perry. Frances was the daughter of William Hill and Abigail Barlow.
