Butch Vig is an American musician and record producer. He is known as the drummer and co-producer of the alternative rock band Garbage. Other members of Garbage are Duke Erikson, Shirley Manson, and Steve Marker. Butch also produced the diamond-selling album “Nevermind” by Nirvana.

Butch is the son of Betty Jeanette and DeVerne William Vig, a physician. He is married to executive Beth Halper, with whom he has a daughter.

Butch’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his third great-grandfather, Ole Gunlefsen Sandstøe.

Butch’s paternal grandfather was Edward Vig (the son of Niels Christian Christiansen Anabeløe, later Vig, and of Gjertrud Lovise Andersdatter Dale). Niels was born in Flekkefjord, Vest-Agder, Norway, to Christian Olsen Sandstøe, later Vig, and Elen Guria Evinsdatter Schajland, later Vig. Lovise was born in Åkra, Rogaland, Norway, to Anders Olsen Dale and Tala Pedersdatter Slåttebrekk.

Butch’s paternal grandmother was Ellen Olsen (also known as Ellen Olson, the daughter of Bertel Olsen Hoilo, later Olson, and of Oline Olsdatter Kjøs). Bertel was born in Gloppen, Sogn of Fjordane, Norway, to Ole Andersen Hoilo, later Olson, and Johanna Jacobsdatter Hoilo, later Olson. Oline was born in Eid, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway, to Ole Christensen Holmøe, later Kjøs, and Eli Gurine Olsdatter Rothi.

Butch’s maternal grandfather was LaVerne Jed “Vern” Brewster (the son of Jeremiah/Jerimiah Edward “Jed” Brewster and Constance Anna Iversdatter Burkum). Jeremiah was the son of Millard Brewster and Emma Ann Denney. Constance was born in Laerdal, Sogn and Fjordane, Norway, the daughter of Iver Nilsen Burkum and Anna Karine Olson Vereide.

Butch’s maternal grandmother was Violet Eileen Larkee (the daughter of Frank Edward Larkee and Alice Cora Grant). Violet was born in Wisconsin. Frank was the son of Charles Edward Larkee, whose parents were Danish and Norwegian, respectively, and of Lydia A. “Lillie” Whitcomb. Alice was the daughter of James Bradbury Grant and Cora Lynn MacDonald.

Butch’s matrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his fourth great-grandmother, Nancy Pennell.
