Wayne is the son of Jeanette Marie (Morrey) and Thomas Wayne Rooney. He was born to a working-class Catholic family. All of his grandparents were born in Liverpool. He is of mostly Irish descent. His brother, John Rooney, and his cousin, Tommy Rooney, are also professional footballers. Wayne is married to product endorser Coleen Rooney (née McLoughlin), with whom he has four children, including Kai Rooney, who is also a footballer. Wayne was raised Catholic.
Wayne has said that one of his grandmothers is Scottish. This has been disputed.
