Ned Kelly was an Australian bushranger, outlaw, gang leader, and convicted police-murderer. He was one of the last bushrangers. Ned was initially a member of bush larrikins the “Greta Mob,” known for stock theft. In 1878, Ned, his brother, bushranger and outlaw Dan Kelly, and associates Joe Byrne and Steve Hart, shot dead three policemen; their subsequent crime spree included raids on Euroa and Jerilderie and the killing of police informer Aaron Sherritt. In 1880, he and his gang engaged in a final gun battle with the police at Glenrowan, during which he wore a suit of bulletproof armour. Ned was the only survivor; he was tried, convincted, and executed at the Old Melbourne Gaol.

He was the son of Irish parents, Ellen (Quinn) and John “Red” Kelly, a bush carpenter, who was born in Clonbrogan, near Moyglas, County Tipperary. His father was a transplanted convict, convicted of stealing two pigs. The family moved to Avenel, near Seymour, during Ned’s childhood. His sister was Kate Kelly.

He is a real Australian folk hero. We all love him here in Oz. The time when Ned was alive there was still a lot of animosity between the Irish and British. This conflict has a lot to do with the Australian character. The Eureka Stockade is a very good example of the conflict between the Irish and authority.
