Thurston is an Australian professional rugby league footballer. He was with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and the North Queensland Cowboys of the National Rugby League (NRL), and a representative of Queensland, Australia, Prime Minister’s XIII, and Indigenous All Stars.

His father, Graham, from New Zealand, has English ancestry. His mother, Debbie, is of Gunggari Aboriginal descent. A few websites have stated that he is of Māori descent, though this does not appear to be accurate.

He has stated, “I’m just proud of my family and where I come from.”

Johnathan is married to Samantha Lynch, with whom he has four children. Johnathan is Catholic.
