Paul Greengrass is an English film director, film producer, screenwriter, and journalist. He has directed the films Resurrected (1989), The Theory of Flight, Bloody Sunday, The Bourne Supremacy, United 93, The Bourne Ultimatum, Green Zone, Captain Phillips, Jason Bourne (2016), 22 July, and News of the World. He wrote his Bloody Sunday, United 93, and 22 July, and co-wrote Jason Bourne and News of the World. He also directed and wrote the made-for-tv movies Open Fire, The One That Got Away (1996), The Fix (1997), and The Murder of Stephen Lawrence, co-wrote the made-for-tv movie Omagh, directed episodes of investigative programme World in Action, and starred in the documentary Five Came Back.
His father was a river pilot and merchant seaman, and his mother was a teacher. His brother, Mark Greengrass, is a historian. Paul is married to talent agent Joanna Kaye. He has two children from a previous marriage; and three children with Joanna.
Paul’s patrilineal line can be traced to Robert Greengrass, who was born, c. 1728, in Walsham-le-Willows, Suffolk, and to his parents William Greengrass and Susan Pearson.
Paul’s paternal grandfather was Charles Joseph Greengrass (the son of Francis William Greengrass and Elizabeth Anne Coombs). Charles was born in Epsom, Surrey. Francis was the son of Charles Greengrass and Lydia Laws. Elizabeth was the daughter of Harriet Coombs.
Paul’s paternal grandmother was Mary Olive Mercy Sanders (the daughter of Henry Sanders and Eliza Emma Grafham). Mary was born in Mickleham, Surrey.
Paul’s maternal grandfather was named Percy James Maddocks (the son of William Dickinson Maddocks). Percy was born in Stonham Aspal, Suffolk.
Paul’s maternal grandmother was Jessie Elizabeth Cooper Lishman (the daughter of John Lishman and Elizabeth Jane Cooper). Jessie was born in Toxteth Park, Liverpool. John was the son of Thomas Myers Lishman and Jane Wilkinson. Elizabeth was the daughter of Simpson Cooper, who was born in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales, and of Elizabeth Bowen.
