Joe Ruby was an American animator, writer, television producer, and music editor. He co-created the Scooby-Doo franchise, with Ken Spears. The two co-founded animation production company Ruby-Spears Productions.

He was the son of Mildred and Carl Ruby. He was of Polish Jewish/Russian Jewish/Lithuanian Jewish descent. His father was born in Canada, or in Kolno, now in Poland. His mother was born in Canada, to immigrant parents. He was married to Carole Ruby, until his death, with whom he had four children.

Joe’s paternal grandfather was named Joseph Rabinowitz/Ruby (the son of Daniel Avigdor Rabinowitz).

Joe’s paternal grandmother was named Esther Feiga Zezel/Fanny Vizanski/Wicensky (the daughter of Kalonymus Vizanski/Wicensky).

Joe’s maternal grandfather was named Solomon Harris Fineberg. Solomon was born in Russia.

Joe’s maternal grandmother was named Sarah Steinhauer. Sarah was born in Vilna, Lithuania.
