James Mangold is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. He has directed the films Cop Land, Girl, Interrupted; Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma (2007), The Wolverine, and Logan.

He is the son of artists Robert Mangold and Sylvia Plimack Mangold. His father is mostly of German, English, Swiss-German, and Scottish descent. His mother’s family is Jewish. James has two children with his former wife, film and television producer Cathy Konrad.

James’ paternal grandfather was Aloysius Edmund Mangold (the son of Frank J. Mangold and Ella M. Schorb). Aloysius was born in New York. Frank was born in New York, to parents from Germany, Peter Mangold and Elizabeth Stauder. Ella was born in New York, the daughter of Ferdinand J.
