Cary Fukunaga, also credited by his full name Cary Joji Fukunaga, is an American filmmaker, television director, writer, producer, and cinematographer. He has directed the films Sin nombre, Jane Eyre (2011), Beasts of No Nation, and No Time to Die. He also wrote his Sin nombre and Beasts of No Nation, co-wrote his No Time to Die, and co-wrote the film It (2017). On television, he directed episodes of True Detective, wrote for The Alienist, directed Maniac (2018), which he also co-developed; and directed episodes of Masters of the Air.

Cary’s father was born in an internment camp for Japanese-Americans during WWII. Cary speaks fluent English, French, and Spanish.

Cary’s paternal grandfather was named Raymond Fukunaga.

Cary’s paternal grandmother was named Miyoko.

Cary’s maternal grandfather was Trygve Frederic Grufman (the son of Harold August Grufman and Gunhild Anna Johannson). Trygve was born in Pennsylvania, to Swedish parents.

Cary’s maternal grandmother was Marjorie Julie Bell (the daughter of Marion Russell “Russ” Bell and Marguerite Carlene “Maggie” Schmidt). Marjorie was born in Missouri or Illinois. Marion was the son of Charles Zebulon “Zebbie” Bell and Nellie Ann Woolsey. Marguerite was the daughter of Frederick August Christian Schmidt and Julia Bertha Augusta Neumeyer, who were of German origin. She had roots in Hannover, Lower Saxony.
