Antonin Scalia was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He served on the court for 29 years, from September 26, 1986 until his death on February 12 or 13, 2016. He was previously U.S. Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel, from August 22, 1974 to January 20, 1977, and a Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, from August 17, 1982 to September 26, 1986.

His father, Salvatore Eugene Scalia, was a Sicilian emigrant, from Sommatino, Provincia di Caltanissetta. His mother, Catherine Louise (Panaro), was born in New Jersey, to Italian parents. He was the first Italian-American Supreme Court Justice. He was married to Maureen McCarthy, until his death. The couple had nine children.

Justice Scalia was a Roman Catholic.

Justice Scalia’s paternal grandfather was Antonino Scalia (the son of Salvatore Scalia and Carmela Sanfilippo). Antonino was born in Sommatino. Salvatore was the son of Antonino Scalia and Anna Baldi. Carmela was the daughter of Antonino Sanfilippo.

Justice Scalia’s paternal grandmother was Maria Pietra (the daughter of Calogero Pietra/Di Pietra and Giuseppa Milia). Maria was born in Sommatino. Calogero was the son of Sebastiano Di Pietra and Maria Galante. Giuseppa was the daughter of Calogero Milia and Angela Napoli.

Justice Scalia’s maternal grandfather was Pasquale Panaro (the son of Vincenzo Panaro and Caterina de Angelis). Pasquale was born in Spinazzola, Provincia di Barletta-Andria-Trani, Puglia.

Justice Scalia’s maternal grandmother was named Maria Satriale/Sateriale (the daughter of Antonio Satriale and Maria). Justice Scalia’s grandmother Maria was born in Avellino, Provincia di Avellino, Campania. Vincenzo was the son of Fulgenzio Panaro and Rosa Donio.
