Alfonso Cuarón is a Mexican film director, producer, screenwriter, cinematographer, and editor. He has twice won the Academy Award for Best Director, for Gravity (2013) and Roma (2018). He is the first Hispanic to have won the award. He also co-wrote the former and wrote the latter. His other films as director are Sólo con tu pareja, Y tu mamá también, and Children of Men, all of which he co-wrote; and A Little Princess (1995), Great Expectations (1998), and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Alfonso is the son of Cristina Orozco Romo, a chemical engineer, and Alfredo Cuarón Santisteban, a nuclear physicist, who worked for the International Atomic Energy Agency. He is the sibling of Carlos Cuarón, also a writer and director, and Alfredo Cuarón, a conservation biologist.

Alfonso has a son, filmmaker, writer, and director Jonás Cuarón, with his former wife Mariana Elizondo; and two children with his former wife, Italian actress and journalist Annalisa Bugliani.

Alfonso’s patrilineal line can be traced back to his sixth great-grandfather, Félix Antonio Cuarón.

Alfonso’s paternal grandfather was José María Cuarón Cuarón (the son of Jesús Cuarón y Domínguez and Isidra Beatriz Cuarón Téllez). José was born in Chihuahua, Chihuahua. Jesús was the son of Agapito Cuarón García and Elena María del Rayo Rafaela Josefa Domínguez Ronquillo. Beatriz was the daughter of José María de Jesús Cuarón Bernal and María Eligia Rita Téllez Ábalos.

Alfonso’s paternal grandmother was Elisa Santisteban Barón (the daughter of José Bernardo Santisteban Pérez and Petra Rafaela Barón Repetta). Elisa was born in Tampico, Tamaulipas. Bernardo was a Spanish emigrant, from Santander (now part of Cantabria), and was the son of Bernardo Santisteban Castañeda and Tomasa Pérez Esnal. Petra was the son of Juan Barón Mercadante and an Italian emigrant, Rosa Repetta (or Rosa Repetta Gasola in Spanish), of Chiavari, Genoa.
