LOS ANGELES - SEP 13: A.J. McLean at the Voices On Point at Cen

Birth Name: Alexander James McLean

Place of Birth: West Palm Beach, Florida, U.S.

Date of Birth: January 9, 1978

*Scottish, with smaller amounts of Irish, English, and French (father)
*Puerto Rican, German (mother)

AJ McLean is an American musician, singer, dancer, actor, and entertainer. He is known as a member of the band Backstreet Boys, along with Nick Carter, Howie D., Brian Littrell, and Kevin Richardson.

AJ is the son of Denise Irma (Fernandez) Solis and Robert Blue “Bob” McLean. AJ is married to model and stylist Rochelle Karidis, with whom he has two children.

His father is of Scottish, and some Irish, English, and French, descent. His mother is of half Puerto Rican and half German ancestry.

AJ has evidently stated that he is of one sixteenth Jewish ancestry. It is not clear if this is accurate. He may have been referring to his German grandmother’s lineage.

AJ’s paternal grandfather was Luther Irving McLean (the son of Alexander McLean and Flora Jane McDonald/MacDonald). Luther was born in Massachusetts. Alexander and Flora were born in Canada, to Scottish parents. Alexander was the son of John McLean and Catherine. Flora was the daughter of Alexander McDonald/MacDonald and Catharine/Catherine.

AJ’s paternal grandmother was Irene Frances/Francis Thompson (the daughter of Edwin Francis Thompson and Irene May Grant). A. J.’s grandmother Irene was born in Massachusetts. Edwin was the son of Nova Scotia-born parents, George Thompson, whose father was English, and Mary Jane Murphy, who had French, Irish, and English ancestry. AJ’s great-grandmother Irene was the daughter of Frederick “Fred” Grant and Mary Greer.

AJ’s maternal grandfather was Adolph Henry Fernandez (the son of Adolfo/Adolph Fernandez and Benedicta Rodriguez). A. J.’s grandfather Adolph was Puerto Rican.

AJ’s maternal grandmother was Ursula Margerat/Margaret Maier (the daughter of Wilhelm/William Maier and Kate Bubendey). Ursula was born in Germany, and moved to the U.S. around 1925.

he claimed to be 1/16th jewish like me

but i don’t believe him

You have claimed before to be a quarter Jewish, not 1/16th.

Where did he say he has Jewish ancestry? I’m getting tired of these sourceless claims.

I found Adolfo Fernandezon a 1910 census:

His parents’s were Adolfo Vicente Francisco Alfredo Ramon Maria de la Paz Fernandez Rojas (son of Vicente Fernandez Y Díaz and Maria Rojas Y Gonzalez) and Maria del Rosario Barea Y Rodriguez (daughter of Francisco Barea Y Marquez and Juana Paula Rodriguez). Adolfo was from Algeciras, Andalusia, Spain, his father was from Casar de Periedo, Cantabria.

How do we know his father’s ethnicity? As far as I know, all we have is his surname.

By the name, the B in Robert McLean’s name stands for Blue.

I don’t know.

A. J.’s paternal grandparents were ? McLean and Irene F.

Irene was born 1911 in Medford, Massachusetts, according to her obituary, which strangely doesn’t mention A. J.’s grandfather, only his father.

By typing in this information you find an Irene Frances Thompson, who was the son of Edwin Francis Thompson and Irene May Grant. Edwin was the son of George Thompson and Mary J. Murphy. Irene was the daughter of Fred Grant and Mary Greer.

Maybe you (or someone else) could verify if this is Irene.

Yes, that’s McLean’s grandmother.

madman June 13, 2017 at 2:02 am

Just curious, how did you find A. J.’s paternal grandfather?

Alexander was the son of John McLean and Catherine.

George Thompson and Mary Jane Murphy were both born in Nova Scotia.

George Thompson’s father was English.

Mary Jane Murphy was of French, Irish, and English descent, according to this:

Maybe you can change to:
*Scottish, English, French, Irish (father)
*Puerto Rican, German (mother)

I found him here, by putting in the surname McLean, with spouse Irene Frances Thompson.

I verified Irene’s parents from her Social Security death record.

A. J. is the son of Denise (Fernandez) and Bob McLean.

A. J.’s maternal grandparents were Adolph H. Fernandez and Ursula Maier. Ursula was born in Germany.

madman September 17, 2016 at 5:02 am

Denise (Fernandez) and Bob McLean —> Denise Irma (Fernandez) Solis and Robert B. “Bob” McLean

Adolph H. Fernandez —> Adolph Henry Fernandez

Adolph was infact Puerto Rican, not Cuban.

Obituary of A. J.’s maternal grandfather, Adolph Henry Fernandez – http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/orlandosentinel/obituary.aspx?n=adolph-henry-fernandez&pid=1737829

I think this might be Adolph on the 1930 U.S. Census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X42H-798

In that case, Adolph was the son of Adolph Fernandez and Benedicta.

This is probably A. J.’s maternal grandmother on the 1930 U.S. Census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X4KR-J1W

Ursula was the daughter of Wilhelm Maier and Kate.

He’s actually Scottish, Irish, Portuguese, Cuban, German. His father is Scottish, Irish, and Portuguese and his mother is Cuban and German…

None June 15, 2010 at 3:05 am

He’s still a member not a former member

Kimmel July 26, 2016 at 4:24 pm

True. But I read somewhere all the band members were listed as ‘unemployed’.

fuzzybear44 July 27, 2016 at 12:39 am

Well he maybe unemployed , but with 45 million , does he really have to work
