She is the daughter of Nancy Lee (Carvin) and Andrea/Andrew Francesco Bertinelli, a General Motors executive. Valerie has a son, bassist Wolfgang Van Halen, with her former husband, musician, songwriter, producer, and inventor Eddie Van Halen.

Valerie’s paternal grandmother was Angeline/Angelina Maddalena Maria Crossa/Crosa (the daughter of Francesco/Frank George Crossa and Maria Francesca “Mary” Possio). Angeline was born in Sanremo, Imperia, Italy. Valerie’s great-grandmother Maria Francesca was born in Lanzo Torinese, Province of Turin, Piedmont, Italy.
