Syd Barrett was an English singer, songwriter, musician, and painter. He was a co-founder, and original singer and lead guitarist, of progressive rock band Pink Floyd. He left the music industry in 1972. David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright were also members of the band.

Syd was son of Winifred Flack (Heeps) and Max Barrett (Arthur Max Barrett), who was a university morbid anatomist and histologist at the University of Cambridge, and an honorary consulting pathologist to the United Cambridge Hospitals, and to the East Anglian Regional Hospital Board.

Syd’s paternal grandfather was Arthur Samuel Barrett (the son of Samuel Barrett and Mary Nevill). Arthur was born in 1879 in Thaxted, Essex, England, and was a grocer and draper. Syd’s great-grandfather Samuel was the son of Benjamin Barrett and Susan. Mary was the daughter of John Nevill and Frances.

Syd’s paternal grandmother was Alice Mary Ashford (the daughter of The Rev. Charles Ashford and Ellen Garrett). Alice was born in Bury, Lancashire. The Rev. Charles was a Congregationalist minister.

Syd’s maternal grandfather was named Charles Frederick Heeps (the son of John Heeps and Martha). Charles was born in London.

Syd’s maternal grandmother was Annie Elizabeth Flack (the daughter of James Flack and Hannah Chew). Annie was born in Shoreditch, London. James was the son of William John Flack and Charlotte Ellis. Hannah was the daughter of William Chew and Elizabeth.
