Maicon was born in Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, a town founded by German settlers.

According to legend, he was supposed to be named after the actor Michael Douglas, only for his father, Manuel Sissenando, to be misunderstood when registering the birth. However, Maicon himself has denied this.
