Joseph McCarthy was an American politician. He was also known as Joe McCarthy. A member of the Republican Party for most of his political career, he served as a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, from January 3, 1947 to May 2, 1957, his death. He was also Wisconsin Circuit Court Judge for the 10th Circuit, from January 1, 1940 to January 3, 1947, and Chair of Senate Government Operations Committee, from January 3, 1953 to January 3, 1955.

He was the son of Bridget (Tierney) and Timothy McCarthy. His father was born in Wisconsin, to an Irish father and a German mother. His mother was born in Wisconsin, to Irish parents.

He was married to researcher Jean Fraser Kerr, until his death, with whom he had a son, who was adopted.

Joseph’s paternal grandfather was Stephen McCarthy (the son of Michael McCarthy and Mary Gleason). Stephen was born in County Tipperary, Ireland.

Joseph’s paternal grandmother was Margaret/Maria/Mary Stoffel/Stuffel (the daughter of Michael Stoffel and Margaret Bauer). Joseph’s grandmother Margaret was born in Wassersuppen/Nemanice, Bohemia, now in the Czech Republic. She was an ethnic German. Joseph’s great-grandmother Margaret was born in Bavaria.

Joseph’s maternal grandfather was named Dennis Tierney/Turney.
