John Amos was an American actor, and professional football player. His roles included the series The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Good Times, The West Wing, and The District, the mini-series Roots, the films Let’s Do It Again, The Beastmaster, Dance of the Dwarfs, American Flyers, Coming to America, and its sequel; Lock Up (1989), Two Evil Eyes, Die Hard 2, Ricochet, Mac (1993), Night Trap, The Players Club, My Baby’s Daddy, Madea’s Witness Protection, and Me Time; and works on stage. He played football at Colorado State University, and was with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos of the American Football League (AFL), the Canton Bulldogs, the Joliet Chargers, the Norfolk Neptunes, the Wheeling Ironmen, the Jersey City Jets, the Waterbury Orbits, and the Victoria Steelers. He was also billed as Johnny Amos.

John was the son of Annabelle and John A. Amos, an auto mechanic. He grew up in East Orange, New Jersey. He had two children with his former wife, artist and equestrian Noel Mickelson.
