Ian Astbury is an English singer and songwriter. He is the lead singer of rock band The Cult. He was also a member of rock supergroup and side project The Wondergirls, with Jay Gordon, Shannon Leto, Mark McGrath, Ryan Shuck, and Scott Weiland.
Ian is the son of Marion (Lindsay) and Robert Astbury, a merchant seaman. He grew up in Merseyside, Liverpool, Glasgow, and later moved with his family to Canada.
Ian has stated, when asked if he traveled a lot growing up:
Yeah, I never had a real sense of identity in terms of cultural identity. My mother was Scots, my father was from Birkenhead, Merseyside area. And I was growing up in North America as well. Cultural identity or a sense of nationalism, maybe you can define it by language and ethnicity, but outside of that not really. So I just made it up as I went along.
