Guðni Th. Jóhannesson is an Icelandic politician, historian, and lecturer at the University of Iceland. He has been President of Iceland, from 1 August, 2016 to 1 August, 2024.

His father, Jóhannes Sæmundsson, was a physical education teacher and coach, who died from cancer. His mother, Margrét Thorlacius, is a teacher and journalist, whose last name is a family name. His middle name Thorlacius is a maternal family name, while his last name Jóhannesson is a patronymic.

Guðni’s younger brother is handball player Patrekur Jóhannesson. Guðni is married to writer Eliza Reid, who is Canadian, from Ottawa, Ontario. He has a daughter with his former wife Elín Haraldsdóttir; and four children with Eliza. His nephew, Patrekur’s son, is rapper JóiPé.

Guðni’s paternal grandfather was Sæmundur Leópold Jóhannesson (the son of Jóhannes Sæmundsson and Guðrún Guðmundsdóttir). Jóhannes was the son of Sæmundur Jóhannesson and Emilia Oktavíana Andrésdóttir. Guðrún was the daughter of Guðmundur Jónsson and Kristín Þóra Pétursdóttir.

Guðni’s paternal grandmother was Sigurveig Kristín Sólveig Guðmundsdóttir (the daughter of Guðmundur Hjaltason and Hólmfríður Margrét Björnsdóttir). Sigurveig was born in Hafnarfjörður. Guðmundur was the son of Hjalti Hjaltason and Kristín Jónsdóttir. Margrét was the daughter of Björn Einarsson and Solveig Magnúsdóttir.

Guðni’s maternal grandfather was Guðni Sigmundsson Thorlacíus (the son of Kristján Sigmundur Þorleifsson Thorlacius and Júlíana Guðfinna Guðríður Guðnadóttir). Sigmundur was the son of Þorleifur Ólafsson Thorlacius and Jóhanna Guðbrandsdóttir. Júlíana was the daughter of Guðni Guðnason and Gróa Jóhannesdóttir.

Guðni’s maternal grandmother was Margrét Ólafsdóttir (the daughter of Ólafur Sigurður Guðmundsson and Þórdís Bogadóttir). Ólafur was the son of Guðmundur Sigurðsson and Guðný Jónsdóttir. Þórdís was the daughter of Bogi Sigurðsson and Guðrún Bjarnadóttir.
